Ever since its reveal, Remedy has been sharing small details about its development and what to expect for this sequel. This includes concept art for Alan Wake 2, the announcement that the original actors and performers from the first game will be reprising their roles, and even smaller details such as how it is targeting an M-rating. Director Sam Lake has been rather open about these details, and even shared a tidbit on its story, claiming it to be a “monster.”

This statement came from one of Lake’s latest tweets, giving fans an update on how Alan Wake 2’s story is progressing. He posted a photo with principal writer Clay Murphy, where he notes that the current page count is more than any other project that the studio has done before. This implies either the story is going to be longer than the original or there is plenty of dialogue that will be heard throughout the game that is primarily causing the increase in pages.

Lake notes that the writing phase is still not complete, but the company will be taking a short break over the summer, and then resume writing after that. Murphy jokes that the Keytar method helps them both when writing for this massive game. Lake also notes that shooting with Alan Wake 2’s cast is also ongoing as well, though doesn’t state how far along the shooting phase is either.

With this huge page count and previous comments from Remedy, there is plenty for fans to be excited about for this sequel. Alan Wake 2 is stated to be one of the studio’s “most beautiful games” and is looking to take advantage of this by releasing on next-gen systems and PC only. The game will also be using the Norightlight Engine, which is the same engine as the studio’s last release Control.

Alan Wake 2 is scheduled to release in 2023 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
